MinerAI will provide a hub to connect S&T students, faculty, staff, and alumni to resources related to AI, create educational offerings for users of AI, facilitate advanced coursework for developers of AI, and support tools that bring AI technologies including generative AI, Diffusion, and Reinforcement Learning to the campus community.

Missouri S&T has been a leader in many aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning for decades. In 2025, an interdisciplinary group of faculty and administrators came together to coordinate our varied efforts and leverage synergy that can position our campus as a key AI innovator, regionally and nationally.

More than thirty faculty from nine departments across all three colleges, as well as three research centers, are engaged in teaching or research within the broad field of AI. MinerAI facilitates interactions and collaborations among these varied faculty members while also pursuing resources that would support their work for research and education.

The resources on this website and the programs we offer are intended to be broadly useful to anyone connected to Missouri S&T. We are introducing AI programs to freshmen during Opening Week, we are developing new graduate certificates and programs, and we support doctoral studies that advance the field of AI. We offer workshops and seminars that are appropriate for people with little or no programming background, as well as events for more advanced developers.

Jonathan W. Kimball is the department chair and Fred W. Finley Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is primarily responsible for coordinating programs and resources for non-experts. His primary research interests include power electronics and microgrids; he has explored the use of deep reinforcement learning for the control of grid-tied energy resources.

Seung-Jong (Jay) Park is the Kummer Endowed Professor and Chair of Computer Science. He is primarily responsible for coordinating advanced educational and research programs and developing AI technologies and computing resources that support AI research. He is an expert in the field of computational platforms for machine learning and other data- and compute-intensive applications.
